As a runner I have a some common fears which include shin splints, stress fractures, and plantar fasciitis. But as a mother and runner my biggest fear is the flu (even a cold). It's just my luck, the moment Mother Nature graces us with beautiful weather I get a phone call at work about MG being sick. I spent my lunch time searching "Spring Flu", "Preventing Flu", and "toddler colds". How is a mom to deal? From my findings in my Google research and my personal experience, here are some tips on making sure you prevent or beat the spring flu.
Eat Foods that Fight the Flu and Common Cold
There are some good flu fighting foods out there. They include foods rich in calcium (vitamin D is good at helping fight germs), vitamin C enriched fruits and veggies (oranges and red bell peppers), green tea (helps relieve inflammation), berries full of antioxidants (blueberries and strawberries), and healthy carbohydrates (full of zinc).
Take Everyday Precautions
- Wash hands with soap and water.
- Cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze.
- Stay away from touching your face (mouth, nose, and eyes).
- If your child is sick DON'T SEND THEM TO SCHOOL! If you are sick stay home from work.
-Disinfect. Germs can live up to three hours on objects, so if you have a sick child clean door handles, toys, and anything else your child may have touched, sneezed on, or licked.
Exercise
One of the easiest ways to combat the cold and flu is to stay healthy. If you are not feeling sick try not to skip your workout. If you start to feel sick transfer your workout routine to your house and complete what you can comfortably do in your current condition.
Get Fresh Air
Since the weather is warmer, open your windows to let some fresh air in. It will help energize everyone stuck indoors. If you and the kids are up for a walk, take one. Just make sure you stay away from other children and playgrounds. Sometimes fresh air is exactly what a sick family needs.
I wish everyone a cold/flu free spring!

Daily Happenings for a Happy Mother Runner
Last week was pretty nice. Not a whole lot of craziness, but just enough excitement to keep me happy.
Thursday my PhD adviser told me that I don't have to take any classes next semester. Instead I can begin my pilot research and work on my literature review. This was the greatest news because I have been feeling really stuck in my studies lately. I know a PhD isn't easy, but I am 5 years in and I just feel like I am not moving. This is the worst feeling when you want to get out and start life. I am also starting to wonder what I am going to be doing after graduation. So if any of you know of awesome jobs that want to hire a PhD in Instructional Technology and Media with a focus in Developmental Child Psychology, please let me know!
Friday I went to FinishLine PT and ran on the AlterG. I can't get over how amazing it was to run with almost no pressure on my lower body. It does motivate me to lose a little more weight. (The Verdict is...FinishLine Rocks!)
Saturday I was informed that I was given a scholarship to attend the Fitness and Health Blogger Conference taking place in Denver during the third weekend in June. The conference "discusses the communication of cutting-edge fitness and health information to the public via the internet with the goal of combating obesity and improving wellness." It also provides many opportunities to take part in seminars and classes. I am really excited about being a part of this.
Sunday was Greece's Independence Day. Since I am Greek Orthodox and married to a Greek man, we partook in the festivities (I made sure to get my cross training class in before we headed out, talk about a busy Sunday!). The whole family headed down to the parade that took place on 5th ave in Manhattan. MG was dressed in the traditional Greek military uniform. He had so much fun, and some of the pictures that were taken were just stunning. It was nice to have a large positive community gathering during a time of struggle and rebellion happening in Greece.
What is happening this week?
I started off my Monday as a Guest Blogger on Running with Sass. Please check it out! Heather has an amazing blog and I am honored to have one of my posts featured. The post that I wrote is titled "Tips for the Active Mom".
Hubby and I have another half marathon coming up on Sunday. It is the Atlantic City April Fools Day Half Marathon.
And my followers and friends submitted 6 votes for me this past weekend. That means I have a 6 mile run dedicated to all of you! If you have a minute please take the time to vote for me for the Fitness Magazine Blogger Award. Thanks for all your support!
Other then that, we will see where life takes me this week :)

Case of the Mondays
Have you ever seen Office Space? If you have you probably remember the clip below. Don't you just want to scream!?
For me I am having a horrible case of the Monday's. A lot stems from an amazing and emotionally charged race on Saturday that has given me the running blues, as well as <insert whisper> that time of the month, and the very basic fact that it is Monday. I have been trying to find things around me that make me smile and think, "Monday isn't so bad!" So here it is, my anti-case of the Monday's list.
#1 - Really taking in the the beauty that is NYC.
#2 - Seeing a group of small children watching the trains pass by and getting the conductor to honk his/her horn.
#3 - Spotting a poster with crazy discounted tickets to go see Spider Man the musical
#4 - Realizing that I shouldn't feel blue about an amazing race. Instead I should be depressed by the pile of readings I have stacked on my desk... <sigh> graduate school stinks!
#5 - An amazing salad for lunch with mixed greens, apples, cranberries, turkey, tomatoes, and eggplant. Yummy.
#6 - Seeing a professor cruise down a hall on a non-motorized scooter (no picture, sorry)
#7 - Passing by an office of an elderly man, who is sitting at his desk jamming out to the Dirty Dancing soundtrack (no picture, sorry)
#8 - This face.
#9 - And this face.
After writing this post Monday doesn't seem so bad after all!

Wardrobe Wednesdays: Our Little Cheer Squad (Plus a GIVEAWAY!)
It's wardrobe Wednesday again!
Lately I am all about shirts that have awesome sayings that reflect my personality. But what about the people who come out to cheer us on? Since spring seems to have arrived, children will begin to line the race routes to cheer on their favorite people (mom, dad, aunt, uncle, grandma, grandpa, etc.). Along with those cute signs that say "free high five's" and "Go Mommy Go!" I think it's adorable when children wear shirts that scream "My loved one is da bomb!" or "I can't wait to be a runner also!"
So here are some of my FAVORITE children's running tees that I have come across!
All these can be purchased at CafePress. They are currently providing shoppers 31% off their order with the promo code PiDay314 (Today Only!)
OK Now for the Giveaway...
I am also giving away one "Future Runner" t-shirt to a lucky mommy/daddy for their precious little one (you choose the size and color).
All you have to do is tell me what your family's favorite activity is in the comment section below. One lucky winner will be selected using random.org on March 23, 2012.

Mama Said There Would Be Days Like This
Years ago (13 to be exact) I ran track in high school. I only ran a season, but I really enjoyed it. I was a hurdler and I wasn't really good at it (which is an understatement). My coach never made me feel inferior but it was apparent that I wasn't on her "all-star" team. I did run 4th heat after all. Many times I would stumble and fall while trying to get around the track. I honestly think people stayed to watch me run for a good laugh.
Today felt like one of those days, just trying to get over the hurdles to arrive at my final destination. The day started off on a sour note. I didn't wake up early enough to get my run in before MG got up. I do blame this on staying up WAY too late to watch the Antique Roadshow, damn intriguing television. The whole morning MG and I were pretty cranky. MG because he wanted to go for a walk and me because we had no coffee and I didn't get enough sleep. As the morning went on I decided that I would sneak out while MG was napping.
Once I got him down for a nap, I got all my stuff together, laced up my shoes, and grabbed my jacket. As I headed for the door, hubby looks at me and asks "where are you going?" I specifically remember telling him my exit strategy and him nodding. But apparently it didn't stick. Hubby followed up the question with "You can't go. I have to leave soon for work." DAMN! My excitement just hit a wall. Now when will I get my run in?
The afternoon proceeded a little more smoothly. MG woke-up happy, which always improves a mommy's mood. I decided that instead of heading to the gym for interval work, I would try to get a good 5 miler in. I do have a jogging stroller, so why not utilize it. So I get MG all ready to go out the door (jacket, hat, shoes) and low-and-behold.... no stroller. It had been left in the trunk of our car! REALLY!? Now I had to try to explain to a 2 year old why we weren't going for a walk. Needless to say it was meltdown central. Once I got MG calm, I decided we would indulge in some ice cream and coloring.
As the afternoon passed I decided that I would drop MG off at his grandmothers tonight, so I don't have to worry about getting him ready to drop him off early tomorrow. It would also provide me the opportunity to get to the gym and complete my much attempted interval work.
After hubby dropped off MG and came home, I took the car and started off towards the gym. I didn't even get up the street when I got a phone call. It was hubby wanting me to stop at the Chinese Restaurant to pick up food for his mom before I went to the gym. Next door to the restaurant was a liquor store. Fate tempted me, oh how easy it would be to throw in the towel and go home to drink a couple glasses of wine. But no, I must remain strong and get to my end destination.
As I left the restaurant I get another phone call. My mother in-law telling me I forgot MG's pjs. I knew this had to be a mistake because I remember packing them. Thankfully hubby just forgot the bag in the car. But the thought of going back home to grab pjs would make me totally pass up the gym. I finally dropped off the food and the missing bag and headed to the gym.
Could this really be happening? It was 9:00 pm after all. NOPE! When I arrived at the gym I realized that it was a Friday night. This wouldn't be a problem in other areas, but since my gym was surrounded by bars and hip restaurants there was ABSOLUTELY NO parking. I circled and circled and circled, going up and down blocks. Nothing. I heard the voice in my head saya million times "just go home!" I refused to give in. I finally saw taillights in a nearby parking lot, someone was leaving. I zoomed in and took the spot.
It was 9:33 pm and I had finally arrived. I had been ready to go since 1:00pm, so for a total of 8ish hours I was wearing my workout clothes and shoes patiently waiting to get in my miles. Once I got into the gym I put my stuff away went to the mirror and.... shit! I was covered in chocolate! Yep chocolate ice cream. In my mad dash out the door I forgot to change my shirt which MG put his ice cream hands all over. Oh well can't win them all, need to get on the treadmill.
While running time flew by and my run felt great. I remember saying to myself "Wow, you are getting stronger". Not only that but my comfortable pace seemed to easy so I had to speed up a bit. After 3 miles of interval work I had done it! I overcame all the hurdles of being a mom, wife, daughter in-law and I finally made it to the gym and got my workout in. As I left the gym, I headed out to my car. FML!! SERIOUSLY?!? I got a parking ticket. Whose karma did I mess with this week? Oh well it could be worse..... Right?
After today I need a mommy vacation. A weekend for me to escape and really focus on what I love to do. And I think the Fitness & Health Bloggers Conference might just be the most amazing opportunity to do this. During MG's nap I was catching up on some blogs and I discovered that FitFluential as well as Refuel With Chocolate Milk are providing scholarships for bloggers to go! How awesome would that be, especially after the three traffic tickets this week. Plus it's in Denver, which is one of my favorite places. So keeping my fingers crossed!
On a completely different note, don't forget that tomorrow I will be live tweeting throughout the seminars at the MultiSport Conference in NYC. Totally pumped for this. If you would like to follow me please go to twitter and follow HappyMotherRun and/or use #MSNYC. I am looking forward to a whole day dedicated to health and fitness, plus I love expo!
And finally, please take the time to vote for Happy Mother Runner to win a Fitterati Blogger Award from Fitness Magazine. It would mean the world to me. Just click button below, register, then vote!

It's Days Like These
A lot has been going on with this Happy Mother Runner lately. And overall, this week has been pretty exciting, especially for it being a non-race week and only Wednesday. I do have to admit that I thought it was going to be the complete opposite since it started off poorly. On Monday I ended up getting pulled over by a NYC police officer and receiving two traffic tickets (which will cost me the price of a Goofy Challenge registration).
Tuesday morning I woke-up from a horrible night of sleep, thanks to my allergies, to MG being adorable. He couldn't have put a bigger smile on my face.
While my hubby was playing "gottcha" with MG (running around and tickling each other then screaming gottcha) I snuck out of the house and hurried off to the gym to get some hill work under my belt. While sitting in my car waiting for it to warm up, I got a blinky message on my phone. And guess what I see??
Women's Running Magazine named me Running Goddess of the day. I wish they had a blogger badge because I would put that sucker at the top of my page! I love the name Running Goddess, do you think that people will call me Dr. Running Goddess when I finally get my PhD? Seeing that message made me run a little harder.
When I got home from the gym MG and I did some light finger painting
and we then ate some bbq... yummy!
MG and I then took a walk and stopped for some hot chocolate. The day ended on a high note, we went out to dinner with an amazing friend for her birthday. I honestly couldn't have asked for a better day.
All the awesomeness overflowed into today and it started off on a great note. MG had stayed over at his grandmas for the night. So I got up a little later then usual and headed off to do a tempo run. The run was AMAZING! I kept my heart rate at 80% and my times were pretty impressive (for me) for remaining at tempo. If this is any indication of how my next race will go, I really think I will be hitting a PR (keeping my fingers crossed).
After the gym I went grocery shopping and then headed home. I spent the rest of the day cooking dinner, playing with Michael, and cleaning. At 3:00 I hurried to get online to register for the Marine Corps Marathon. I thought that this would be a great race to have as my first full marathon. For 30 minutes I kept trying to log on to active.... but no luck. Finally, after a 15 minute break, I got Active to work. Thank goodness because the Marine Corps Marathon sold out in 2 hours. The fastest sale out in running history. I am so excited that we got in!!
I am keeping my fingers crossed that the rest of the week will be just as great and that the spring weather (60 degrees) keeps up for my long run this Sunday.

City Girl and a Country Weekend
This weekend I really needed to escape the city and the stress that comes along with it. I needed to go somewhere not expensive and relaxing. So I decided to take a trip to visit my Aunt and Uncle in Pennsylvania. It had been over 20 years since I have seen them last and I felt it was time to pay them a visit. And that was the perfect choice.
So our trip started off pretty interesting. Friday morning while I was getting ready to leave I turned to go grab something out of my packed suitcase. After less than a minute I came back into the bathroom to find this. MG telling me that he is giving himself a bath. Already so independent. So we drove for 3 hours and arrived at my Aunt and Uncles, ate some homemade chicken noodle soup for dinner, and spent the rest of the evening watching MG feed the dogs all of his snacks.
The next morning my aunt and I decided to go for a run. They have an amazing trail right by their house. So I packed up MG in the jogging stroller and we headed out. The run was so relaxing. We passed by farms full of cows, horses, and fields. The trail had some snow from the previous storm a few days prior. When we finished our run and got back to the street MG and I walked through the corn field next to the highway.

He was so happy to get out of the stroller and run. His little legs walked a little over half a mile. And he wanted to keep going. These are MG's shoes after our walk.
After we got back, showered, and MG woke-up from his nap, we headed out to feed the local duck population. MG was thrilled, he had never been around so many ducks and geese.
Once we started our trip back home, I convinced my brother to stop at the outlets. We didn't have a lot of time so I picked the Nike store and bought a few cute items and walked out a winner.
Overall an amazing weekend! The run was one of the best I have had in a long time. And it was great having my Aunt as a running buddy and chatting about the last 20 years.

Running Shoes and Guilt
As a running mother, there are days that I feel down right guilty going out the door. And there have been times where my guilt takes over the reasoning part of my brain and I take off my shoes and actually give up a run. This isn't just a mommy problem, but a problem for any woman who has work or home obligations. We think, "Really? Is it ok for me to go for run when the shit is hitting the fan at home or work?!" #1 Killer of Runs
Creaky floors. Yep creaky floors are the number one cause of not getting out the door. Well, at least at my house. What do I mean by this? I am an early morning runner, I try to get out and back before anyone wakes up. Living in a somewhat small apartment in NYC doesn't provide me with many options when it comes to escape routes. If I want to go for a run I have to sneak out of my bedroom and pass my sons room to get out the door. Many times (too many to count) I have tried sneaking out and I get right to the door and the floor goes !CREAK! and the next thing I hear is "MAMA!" When this happens, just for a second, everything in me deflates. I go into his bedroom and greet him with a "Good Morning, Sunshine!" and he just giggles. It makes me so happy to see his face in the morning, but what's even better is seeing him wake up (with his happy face) after I have a great run under my belt. I have to admit, I have tried everything to pass over that creaky floor without making a sound. I have shuffled my feet instead of walking, baby crawled, army crawled, marked areas on the floor with tape. I have even kept him up late in hopes that he will sleep in. But some days, to get out the door is impossible even at 5:30 am. I do find a way to make it work. The other day I did sprints carrying him along. And I have done runs pushing a none jogging stroller (a jogger is on my PLEASE SANTA PLEASE list). But no matter what, at the end of the day I am a Happy Mother Runner because I have a son who says "BRAVO MAMA!" even after my most horrible run.

Running in the news - Woman gives birth after finishing Chicago
One of my goals is to run the Chicago marathon someday. But I am telling you I am not doing it 9 months pregnant. Amber Miller, on the other hand, did. She signed up for the Marathon in February and found out shortly after that she was expecting a child. With the advice of her doctor and help from her husband she finished the marathon. She only ran as much as her doctor told her she could and she walked the rest. This is what Amber said to reporters.
"We signed up for the race in February, and then two days later I found out I was pregnant," Amber Miller told reporters today at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. "I wasn't real determined to run, and I kind of thought I would have already had the baby. And you know, it comes to the night before, I'm still pregnant -- and I paid for it, so I'm gonna run it."
Many have criticized her for doing such a strenuous task right before birth. But I give her credit. When I was that pregnant I couldn't even move. The fact that she had a healthy baby, says a lot. My opinion is that other people are doing much worse right before giving birth, at least she was keeping herself healthy.
